The beginning of the year often calls for new year resolutions and fresh starts.
I want to begin by saying, each year, it is important to look back and reflect the year before. Every year, we have big wins, we have loses, we make memories, we work hard, and most importantly we give and receive. Each year is embedded with lessons and greater blessings. Each year we share our firsts and lasts with those around us.
This year, I discharged from PHP Treatment, I moved across the country and started college, I met new friends and I overcame huge milestones for myself. Our years and accomplishments will be different, but they will also teach us about the greater meaning in Life. I often think it's important for us to look back on the year and instead say "why didn't i do this?" and say, "I'll try again next year". Often times, we reflect harshly and forget to look at the positives the year may had, and how they will set you up in the following year.
A couple weeks ago I had a conversation with an old friend, we started to talk about New years resolutions. We continued to go back and fourth, leading us to a conversation about our individual goals and hopes. The man next to us said, "I don't mean to intrude, but you will have the most success with a doable and thoughtful resolutions." I looked at him kind of confused, but then thought to myself, have I ever really followed through with my resolutions or even attempted? After that conversation, I've made it a goal to myself to make meaningful resolutions and I thought it would be beneficial to share those here!
Lily's Ideas to make (and keep) New Years Resolutions:
Picking the right resolution
- we often times choose resolutions that do not fit to benefits ourselves, in fact we often choose resolutions that our based on what society says should change or to fit in with societal implications.
- Goals aren't specific enough, Instead of saying "I want too.." you can say "I want to do... by..."
- Making them measurable - Taking photos of something to be able to track progress of fitness/cutting back
Identifying the Obstacles
- chances are that you already know this may be a hard goal to meet, instead identify what makes it hard and why.
find a buddy!!
- accountability is huge, find someone who will motivate you and push you to succeed.
- its more fun to have a friend by your side!
What if you fall short of your goals?
Give yourself a break. Stop beating yourself up! Everyone makes mistakes, has setbacks and failures. You don't come with a book on how to get it right all the time. You will fail sometimes, not because you planned to, but simply because you're human. Failure is apart of a great life. Stand up to it and handle it with grace. Because, you can. Les Brown
Lastly, It is never to late to make resolutions or start your "New Year" resolutions now. We often hear, "new year, new me". You can flip the page in your book at any point, This is the life you are making for yourself.
You got it. Write your story.
